The governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, revealed that the US Open 2020 will kick off 24 hours earlier than initially planned. The tournament is set to commence on August 31st.
Cuomo shared this update during his regular briefing on Tuesday, expressing his enthusiasm for the event by stating, “We’re excited about the US Open. It’s going to be held in Queens from August 31 to September 13. It will take place without spectators, but viewers can enjoy watching it on TV, and I’m okay with that.”
To ensure the safety of players and essential personnel amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Cuomo outlined a series of stringent measures. These include extensive testing, enhanced cleaning protocols, additional locker room facilities, and specialized housing and transportation arrangements.
Shortly after Cuomo’s announcement, Mike Dowse, the CEO of the USTA, conveyed his excitement about the approval received from Governor Cuomo and the state of New York to host both the 2020 US Open and Western & Southern Open at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
The approval from the government was crucial for the tournament to proceed. The US Open is anticipated to garner substantial economic interest, with an estimated $120 million in television revenues from ESPN and various global TV partners.
