Sabrina Ionescu, a standout player from the Oregon Ducks, was chosen as the first overall pick in the WNBA draft that took place recently. However, the exact timeline for her debut with the New York Liberty, her new team, is currently uncertain.
This year’s draft was unique as it was conducted remotely, a departure from the traditional in-person event, due to the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic. Players participated from their homes while WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert disclosed the selections from her residence in New Jersey, showcasing each player’s jersey as they were picked.
Reflecting on her achievement, Ionescu shared with reporters from her residence in California, “I’ve dedicated my entire basketball career to this moment and I’m thrilled to see it all come to fruition. I feel honored and eager for the opportunity that lies ahead.”
She also expressed her gratitude for being able to share the experience with her loved ones amidst the current societal circumstances, stating, “Although the evening looked different from what I had envisioned, I’m grateful to have my family and closest companions by my side. I cherish this time spent with them, navigating through the current situation together.”
With a remarkable collegiate career, Ionescu holds the distinction of being the first player to achieve 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 1,000 assists, and she also boasts the NCAA record for the most triple-doubles.
