It appears that Dak Prescott might not be getting the contract extension he had hoped for.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the team is leaning towards using an exclusive franchise tag on Prescott if they can’t come to a long-term agreement.

This move would prevent other teams from negotiating with the former Mississippi State quarterback.

The two parties recently had their first conversation since September during the combine.

New head coach Mike McCarthy emphasized that Prescott is the team’s franchise quarterback.

McCarthy stated, “Definitely. It’s exactly where we want to be with Dak. I think what he’s done to this point speaks for itself. Dak is in a business situation right now. I’ve gone through this as a head coach with a number of my players in the past and, like anything, I think it’s just time to be patient and let the business people work out the business matter.”

During the 2019 season, Prescott threw for 4,902 yards and 30 touchdowns. He also contributed nearly 300 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.

The Cowboys were initially considered Super Bowl contenders for the 2019 season but ended with an 8-8 record, failing to win the NFC East.
