Ryan Newman has regained consciousness following a harrowing crash during the final lap of the Daytona 500.

During the race on Monday, Newman’s NASCAR vehicle collided with the wall at a speed of 200mph. The impact caused his car to flip multiple times and then slide on its roof before coming to a stop in flames on the track.

Newman’s team, Roush Fenway, provided an update on his condition via Twitter on Tuesday, confirming that he was awake and speaking with his loved ones and medical team at Halifax Medical Centre in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The team’s tweet stated, “Ryan Newman remains under the care of doctors at Halifax Medical Centre in Daytona Beach, Florida. He is awake and speaking with family and doctors.”

“Ryan and his family are thankful for the concern and well wishes from people nationwide. They appreciate the continuous support from the NASCAR community and beyond.”

Following the crash, fans anxiously awaited news on Newman’s condition for two hours until it was announced that his injuries were not life-threatening.

Newman’s car made contact with the wall after being nudged by fellow driver Ryan Blaney, causing it to overturn onto its roof. Subsequently, another car struck Newman’s driver’s side at a speed of 190mph.

It took the rescue team eight minutes to upright Newman’s car after extinguishing the flames. He was then swiftly transported by ambulance to the hospital for further care.
