The situation escalated when he made a disrespectful remark about the revered World Series Trophy, which players strive their entire careers to win.
His comment calling the World Series trophy “a piece of metal” sparked immediate backlash from players across the league who hold the trophy in high regard. In response to the uproar, Manfred publicly apologized for his insensitive comments on Tuesday.
“In an attempt to make a point, I made an inappropriate reference to the World Series trophy,” Manfred acknowledged. “It was an error to phrase it that way.”

“While I’m not a baseball player, I am involved in the world of sports, and if someone cheated me out of a victory and I discovered it, I would be extremely upset! I can’t even begin to describe the level of anger I would feel,” James tweeted. “The baseball commissioner needs to pay attention to the voices of his players who are voicing their disgust, anger, and disappointment. It’s up to you to address this issue in the best interest of sports!”
