There has been a long-standing debate about whether the best college football team could outperform the worst NFL team, but this notion has often been deemed unrealistic.
The emergence of the XFL as a competitive entity has brought a new angle to this discussion after an impressive Week 1 performance. The question now arises: “Who would emerge victorious in a faceoff between the 2019 LSU national championship team and an XFL team?”
During a recent episode of The Dan Patrick Show, USA TODAY oddsmaker Danny Sheridan was asked to weigh in on this hypothetical matchup. Sheridan suggested that the DC Defenders and the Houston Roughnecks, both of whom scored more than 30 points in their games, would be favored by 7.5 points against the Tigers.
“Since they are considered semi-pros, and the best that didn’t make an NFL team, based on them playing this weekend I’d make the DC Defenders or the Houston Roughnecks a -2 favorite to win the league after Week 1 and 7.5 point favorite vs. LSU,” Patrick shared on the show.
However, Dan Patrick expressed his disagreement with this evaluation.
It is worth noting that the rosters of the Roughnecks and Defenders consist of either ex-NFL players who did not make the cut or former college standouts who did not secure NFL spots.
The 2019 LSU Tigers are hailed as one of the greatest teams in the history of college football.
