2020 marks the end of almost three years of struggle for Serena Williams. On Sunday, the 38-year-old American won her first grand slam title since 2017 at the Auckland Classic in New Zealand.
It seems only fitting that Williams’ career would pick up again down under, as her last victory was at an Australian Open. And now she has another trophy under her belt after a straight sets 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jessica Pegula.
“It feels good, it has been a long time,” Williams told reporters.
Williams has now collected a total of 40 grand slam titles, more than making up for the fact that she lost the doubles final also in New Zealand. Williams, partnered with Caroline Wozniacki, were beaten by US pair, Asia Muhammad and Taylor Townshend 6-4, 6-4.
But Williams has finally achieved her goal of reaching Margaret Court’s record of 24 singles grand slam titles. She has also elected to donate all her prize money to Australian bushfire relief funds.
