The instances of sexual misconduct reported in Olympic sports in 2019 have spiked by 55% compared to the previous year, indicating a concerning trend. This surge poses a potential challenge for governing bodies in handling the increasing number of cases.
These statistics have been revealed by the recently-formed US Center for SafeSport. While the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has allocated an additional $1.3 million to this cause, it may still fall short of what is required.
With only 18 lawyers and investigators, the center is grappling with managing 239 reports monthly, a significant leap from the 154 cases handled last year, showcasing a troubling escalation.
To effectively address the mounting workload, the center recognizes the urgent need to double its workforce by the next year and triple it by 2023.
However, it remains unclear as to why there has been such a steep rise in reported cases, aside from the challenge of handling these escalating numbers.
