The location for David Beckham’s proposed Inter Miami soccer stadium, the Melreese golf course in Miami, faces uncertainty as an environmental evaluation revealed elevated levels of arsenic, barium, and lead.
Testing of soil samples conducted by a consultant showed concerning amounts of arsenic contamination, potentially exceeding twice the permissible levels according to the Miami Herald. Hazardous debris such as tile, metal, and glass fragments have also been discovered in the topsoil.
More than 140 environmental assessments have been completed by EE&G over the previous months, with the results presented to the city commissioners this week.
The 31-acre area, in use for over five decades, was slated for transformation into a stadium complex with accompanying amenities like a shopping center and office space. The proposed stadium, with a seating capacity of 25,000, was intended to serve as Inter Miami’s Major League Soccer home venue.
Remediation of the contamination could inflate development costs by an estimated $50 million, raising questions about feasibility within the team’s financial plans. Officials have indicated that they do not intend to request financial aid from the city government.
