The USA Gymnastics organization is prioritizing the safety and well-being of its athletes, especially children, by taking proactive measures to address potential abuse from coaches and parents, aiming to create a secure environment.
Recently, new policies have been introduced following consultations with child welfare experts and input from abuse survivors, including a gymnast who was a victim of former doctor Larry Nassar’s abuse, who spoke at a safety conference.
Li Li Leung, the president and CEO of USA Gymnastics, emphasized the importance of the Safe Sport Policy in establishing a culture that prevents abuse and ensures everyone contributes to safeguarding athletes and members. The policy forms the basis of creating a safe, supportive environment where athletes and professionals can flourish and pursue their goals and dreams, whether it be mastering a skill locally or representing the nation globally.
The organization’s focus is on defining appropriate boundaries between mentors and athletes. All physical interactions are encouraged to be conducted in public settings, observed by others, and have clear boundaries regarding timing. Any interaction can be halted at any point if deemed necessary.
In an effort to maintain transparency and safety, coaches and athletes are required to communicate online or over the phone only in the presence of a parent or guardian. Furthermore, the exchange of personal gifts between parties is now prohibited.
All staff must undergo background checks as part of the ongoing efforts to prevent any form of sexual abuse within the gymnastics community, ensuring the safety of both male and female gymnasts.
As a result of these stringent measures, Larry Nassar has been sentenced to life in prison for his reprehensible behavior towards young gymnasts. These new rules aim to reassure young gymnasts of their safety and allow them to continue participating in a sport they are passionate about without fear.
