The 92nd Scripps National Spelling Bee came to a close with a remarkable outcome; Business Insider details that 8 participants successfully navigated 20 intense rounds of challenging words. During the 17th round of the competition, organizers declared that any contestant able to spell three more words accurately would share the championship title.
While tie-breakers are not uncommon in the annual spelling event, this year stood out as the first time more than two winners emerged victorious. In the history of the bee, there have been six instances of two-way ties, notably occurring every year from 2014 to 2016.
The co-champions of the 92nd Scripps National Spelling Bee are Rishik Gandhasri, Erin Howard, Saketh Sundar, Shruthika Padhy, Sohum Sukhatankar, Abhijay Kodali, Christopher Serrao, and Rohan Raja.
Each of the 8 winners is set to receive a prize of $50,000 alongside a trophy.
