The Dutch ice skating association has reported that Sjinkie Knegt, a silver medalist in Olympic short track skating, has sustained serious burns in a recent incident at his home. The accident occurred when a fire broke out in his house while he was present.
The incident took place on a Thursday morning, resulting in Knegt’s clothes catching fire as he was lighting a wood-burning stove. He suffered third-degree burns on his left leg and was promptly rescued and transported to a hospital in Groningen for treatment and observation.
Knegt, who excelled at the Pyeongchang Olympics last year by winning a silver medal in the 1,500-meter race, was unable to participate in the upcoming European Championship due to a pre-existing leg injury sustained last month in a separate accident involving a forklift truck. Now, with the additional setback of third-degree burns, his return to the sport is expected to be delayed.
