The end of Urban Meyer’s coaching career was marked by a memorable victory as No. 6 Ohio State defeated No. 9 Washington 28-23 in the Rose Bowl Game presented by North-western Mutual. While the game was not as dramatic as past editions, it still showcased Ohio State’s strength and validated Meyer’s pre-game nerves.

Meyer admitted, “I don’t think nervous adequately describes my feelings before a game. I was extremely anxious.”

Initially, Ohio State took a commanding 28-3 lead, setting the stage for what seemed like a victory lap for Meyer. Despite a late comeback attempt by Washington, the Buckeyes held on, leaving some lingering questions.

Ohio State, for the second consecutive year, missed out on the four-team playoff despite winning the Big Ten title. While there was less controversy this year, the impact of their loss to Purdue was significant. The Buckeyes’ near-collapse against Washington won’t be easily forgotten, especially after relinquishing a 25-point lead.

Alabama, the top-ranked team, would have presented a different challenge altogether. Quarterback Dwayne Haskins reinforced his status as a top NFL draft prospect with a standout performance, going 25 of 37 for 251 yards and three crucial touchdowns.
