Around 15 months prior to the start of 2018, disturbing revelations about Larry Nassar’s abusive behavior began to surface in newspapers. These reports uncovered a pattern of sexual abuse that eventually led to his trial and subsequent imprisonment.

However, it was in January 2018 that a pivotal moment occurred when over 150 female athletes gave testimony against Nassar during his sentencing hearing for charges related to sexual abuse and child pornography. This testimony marked a critical juncture in the turmoil surrounding the case, shedding light on the extent of the harm caused.

The testimonies unveiled the true nature of Nassar’s actions, prompting introspection, outrage, and calls for reformation. This event empowered women in sports and society at large, giving them a platform to speak out against abuse that had been hidden for decades.

The scandal resulted in significant leadership changes within Michigan State University, USA Gymnastics, and the US Olympic Committee. It was also voted as the standout news story of the year by editors and members of the Associated Press, garnering twice as many votes as the second and third place finishers, including the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl victory.

This scandal also influenced the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn a law prohibiting sports gambling outside of Nevada. Despite the tumultuous events of 2018, there were also moments of resilience and hope as survivors cautiously looked to the future.
