After briefly losing the top spot to Gonzaga and Duke, Kansas has once again reclaimed its position as the number one ranked team. The Jayhawks have faced some challenges early in the season, needing overtime to secure victories against Stanford and Tennessee, and coming from behind to defeat New Mexico State and Marquette.
Their latest test came against Villanova, where Kansas struggled in the first half but managed to pull through with crucial free throws in the final minutes to hold off the Wildcats. The looming question is how long Kansas can maintain their top ranking.
The potential return of Udoka Azubuike could prove pivotal for the team. Standing at 7 feet tall, Azubuike adds a significant dimension to Kansas’ gameplay that few other teams can match. Once he is fully recovered, his presence can greatly benefit the team.
Aside from relying on Lagerald Vick and Dedric Lawson, the Jayhawks are in need of other consistent contributors. Devon Dotson has shown promise, but Coach Self is hoping for a breakout performance from Quentin Grimes at this point in the season.
Grimes, a highly touted freshman, has already showcased his potential with a 21-point game against Michigan State and a stellar ten-assist performance against Vermont. If Kansas continues to work on their game and remain undefeated, they have a good chance of holding onto the number one ranking.
