Petter Northug, a celebrated cross-country skier from Norway, has revealed his plans to retire from professional competition. Northug, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and a 13-time world champion, expressed gratitude for his successful career but stated that he will not be making a comeback.
The 32-year-old athlete acknowledged his recent performance struggles and his failure to qualify for the Norwegian Olympic team earlier this year for the Pyeongchang Games. Northug mentioned that he looks forward to supporting his team from the sidelines.
Northug’s illustrious career includes Olympic victories at the 2010 Vancouver Games, where he secured two gold medals along with a silver and a bronze. He continued his success in the 2014 Sochi Games by adding two team bronze medals. Additionally, he holds the record for the most stage wins (13) in the Tour de Ski and equaled Bjørn Dæhlie’s record for the most gold medals in a single Nordic World Ski Championships by winning nine gold medals in the 4 x 10 km relay in Val di Fiemme 2013.
Regarded as a promising talent early in his career, Northug showcased remarkable skills that set him apart from his peers.
