Initially, the AP voters had underrated Michigan in the beginning of the season. However, the Wolverines have defied expectations and have swiftly ascended to the 5th position in the most recent poll unveiled on Monday, surpassing numerous renowned teams like Gonzaga, Duke, Kansas, and Virginia. Michigan’s remarkable performance includes victories over opponents by margins of at least 17 points, with three of these wins coming against ranked teams.

This season, Michigan has delivered some of its most impressive victories since the 2012-13 season when the Wolverines reached the NCAA Final Tournament. Monday marked the first time since then that they have entered the top 5 rankings.

Michigan’s success this season is attributed to an enhanced focus on defensive tactics. The team currently holds the top rank in defensive efficiency nationwide, with an adjusted defensive rating of 86.8 points according to KenPom.

Coach John Beilein emphasized the importance of defensive tactics, stating that the team’s strategy involves disrupting opponents rather than solely focusing on blocking shots. Michigan showcased this defensive prowess in their recent victory against Purdue. Beilein believes that consistent defense is key to the team’s success and encourages the players to embrace this style of play.

Although Michigan began the season ranked 19th, they have rapidly moved up the rankings and now hold a top 10 position in the tournament, reflecting their stellar performance.
