All full-time workers of the Washington Capitals under Monumental Sports & Entertainment on June 7 will be gifted Stanley Cup championship rings, mirroring those of Alex Ovechkin and his Capitals teammates. This decision was driven by Ted Leonsis, owner of the Capitals and Monumental Sports & Entertainment, to commemorate their historic Stanley Cup victory.
On Monday, an email was circulated by the company’s head of human resources, notifying all MSE employees that they will be receiving championship rings as a gesture from Leonsis.
About 500 full-time MSE employees will have ring fittings this week, according to a company representative. The rings will be delivered later in the fall and may differ from the ones exclusively tailored for the Capitals’ coaches and players. Specifics on the ring designs were not revealed.
This is not the first time Leonsis has pleasantly surprised his employees with grand gifts. In June, he treated 200 MSE employees to a trip to LA to attend a Stanley Cup final game where the Capitals faced the Golden Knights in either Game 1 or Game 2.
Leonsis joins a lineage of NHL owners giving championship rings to employees. Previously, Ron Burkle and Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins gifted Cup rings to 150 arena staff following the 2016-17 championship win. Additionally, in the past, Jostens created replicas of Penguins championship rings for fans.
The Capitals are slated to commence the regular season with a Stanley Cup banner-raising event against the Boston Bruins on October 3.
