When the Yankees added experienced hitter Matt Holliday to their roster just before the start of the 2017 season, it seemed like a good move. Bringing in a player with nearly 300 career home runs and past MVP consideration could only benefit the young team.
Initially, the decision looked promising. In April of last year, Holliday posted an impressive .985 OPS. He seemed energized and contributed significantly to a young Yankees squad aiming to return to prominence. However, his performance dipped starting in mid-June, partly due to a lingering illness.
From June 13 onwards, Holliday played in only 43 games and batted .173 for the remainder of the season. The once All-Star candidate became less effective and saw limited playing time. As the Yankees sought additional offensive support, Holliday found himself on the sidelines.
After a period of inactivity, during which other teams seemed hesitant due to his age and recent performance, Holliday has now secured a spot with the Colorado Rockies on a major league contract.
On Thursday, both the NL West and Wild Card contenders reached out to Holliday to rejoin the baseball scene. In his first game back since last season, Holliday went 0-for-3 as the Colorado Rockies secured a victory. The Rockies officially announced his return on Twitter, stating, “OFFICIAL: The Colorado Rockies have added OF Matt Holliday to their roster. Holliday will wear No. 7.”
Holliday boasts a solid .889 career OPS and has hit 314 career home runs. Fans can look forward to seeing him in action again with a fresh beginning.
