The Cleveland Cavaliers have made a new addition to their team by signing point guard Isaiah Taylor to a one-year non-guaranteed contract. The deal was confirmed by Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports on Thursday.Taylor, who is 24 years old, will be joining a competitive backcourt lineup with the Cavaliers. He is expected to participate in the team’s training camp where he will be vying for the role of the third guard.
Among other guards on the roster are Collin Sexton, George Hill, Jordan Clarkson, and J.R. Smith. Taylor played for the Atlanta Hawks last season, appearing in 67 games with 9 starts. He averaged 1.4 rebounds, 6.6 points, and 3.1 assists per game. His addition brings depth to the Cavaliers’ backcourt led by coach Ty Lue.
Originally from Houston, Taylor began his NBA career with the Houston Rockets in the 2016-17 season, playing in only four games with limited playing time.
The financial specifics of the contract are not disclosed. Atlanta released Taylor earlier this summer to avoid any guaranteed payments. However, there is optimism that Taylor might earn a guaranteed contract and a chance to showcase his skills with the Cavaliers.
One area where Taylor needs improvement is his outside shooting, as he has a career three-point shooting percentage below 25% and averages only 1.2 attempts per game. Enhancing his shooting ability will be crucial for his future in the league.
Taylor also has experience playing in the G League, where he averaged 21 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 6.6 assists in 29 games. If he doesn’t secure a spot with the Cavaliers, he could potentially find a place on a G League roster. Nonetheless, Taylor now has a one-year contract and an opportunity to prove himself in Cleveland.
