Former Boston Red Sox player, Jerry Remy, now working as a TV color analyst for the team, is battling cancer again, as confirmed by a NESN statement released on Tuesday.
The statement expressed, “Jerry Remy has been diagnosed with cancer again. At this time, Jerry is focused on his medical treatment. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jerry and his family during this challenging period,”
However, the statement did not provide details about the specific diagnosis or how long Jerry will be away from his TV duties. Jerry had traveled to Toronto with the team after their win against the Yankees on Sunday. He returned home on Tuesday following his latest test results.
Just before Tuesday’s game, his colleagues and players took a moment to acknowledge him.
Red Sox manager, Alex Cora, sent his regards, “Our thoughts are with Jerry. I just texted him. We believe in a higher power and that he will soon be back with us. We’ll miss him for now, but we trust he will recover and return to us.”
Jerry, aged 65, was first diagnosed with lung cancer in 2008. He has faced several recurrences since then. In February 2017, he announced the return of the disease but was back on the show early in the 2017 season. Last June, he revealed that the cancer had returned, requiring surgery and chemotherapy. Although he missed the latter part of the season, he did make a comeback in September for a few games.
Remy, a Red Sox second baseman from 1978 to 1984, had extended his contract in 2016 to continue as the primary color analyst for the team’s TV broadcasts on NESN.
