Pablo Sandoval, the infielder for the San Francisco Giants, will miss the rest of the season due to a right hamstring injury sustained while sliding.

Bruce Bochy, the Giants’ manager, announced Thursday that Sandoval has a significant tear in his hamstring that requires surgery. The injury occurred when Sandoval slid into home plate during a game against San Diego on Sunday. Bochy praised Sandoval for his versatility in filling in for injured teammates at third base and first base, as well as pitching an inning. He said, “They all hurt, but Pablo was so reliable in all the roles that he had.” Bochy added, “The guy did everything. This is a tough one to overcome.”
Sandoval sustained the injury while scoring on a Steven Duggar fly ball that followed his own two-run hit, contributing to the Giants’ 8-5 victory over Milwaukee. Despite initial hopes that the MRI scan on Monday would bring better news, it revealed that Sandoval would be sidelined.
The 32-year-old Sandoval was batting .248 with nine home runs and 40 RBIs. His second tenure with the Giants saw him playing both first and third base. He originally played seven seasons with the team, earning World Series MVP honors in 2012. After becoming a free agent, he signed with the Boston Red Sox on a five-year, $95 million deal in 2014, only to be released in 2017 and return to the Giants three days later. San Francisco is currently paying him the $545,000 minimum salary this year, with the remaining $18 million owed by Boston being offset.
