The NBA has made a significant move into the sports gambling arena. Recently, the league revealed its collaboration with MGM Resorts International, designating MGM as the NBA’s official gaming partner. This deal marks a milestone as the first of its kind for a major professional sports league in the United States.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver remarked, “As the landscape of sports betting in the U.S. continues to evolve rapidly, MGM Resorts stands out as a trusted leader in the gaming industry to forge this innovative partnership with.”
Silver emphasized, “Our joint efforts will ensure an exceptional gaming and entertainment experience for consumers by utilizing precise, real-time data from the NBA and WNBA, as well as our concerted dedication to upholding and enhancing the integrity of our games.”
While the financial specifics of the agreement remain undisclosed, reports from ESPN suggest the deal’s value could amount to at least $25 million spread over three years.
Under this partnership, MGM will have the rights to utilize official NBA and WNBA branding and data, including logos, to enhance its land-based and online sports betting services throughout the United States. This collaboration will also serve to promote MGM through the NBA’s digital platforms such as NBA.com, NBA TV, the NBA app, and various NBA social media channels.
Significantly, this development follows the noteworthy ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in May, which deemed the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act unconstitutional, paving the way for the legalization of sports betting nationwide.
Shortly after the Supreme Court’s decision, states like New Jersey, Delaware, and Mississippi have legalized sports gambling, joining Nevada in this endeavor, with more states poised to follow suit in the near future.
