The Yankees made a big move earlier in the week by acquiring Zach Britton from Baltimore to strengthen their bullpen. However, on Saturday, they traded left-handed reliever Chasen Shreve to the St. Louis Cardinals.This trade opened up a spot on the roster for pitcher J.A. Happ, who joined the team after being traded from Toronto. In return for Shreve and Giovanny Gallegos, the Yankees received first baseman Luke Voit and international signing bonus pool money from the Cardinals.
Voit, 27, had a limited stint with the Cardinals this season, hitting 2-11 with a home run in 8 games before spending most of his time with Triple-A Memphis. Gallegos, 26, had appeared in 20 games for the Yankees over the last two seasons and also played at Triple-A Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
Following a doubleheader with the Royals on Saturday, Shreve expressed his feelings about the trade, saying, “I knew we had to make a move. I just didn’t know what it was gonna be. I had prepared myself for it. I love it here. I’ve been here four years, and it’s gonna suck to leave.”
During the first game of the doubleheader, Shreve gave up a run in an inning of play, marking the first time he had been scored upon since July 7. He had an impressive record, allowing only two runs in his previous 11 outings over 11 innings, boasting a 1.64 ERA. Shreve also made a crucial save in last week’s game against the Mets after Aroldis Chapman struggled in protecting a 4-run lead.
In a tense situation with the bases loaded and no one out, Shreve entered the game and managed to secure a double play, helping the Yankees secure the win.
