On Thursday, the Colorado Rockies struck a deal with the Blue Jays to bring in right-hander Seunghwan Oh to strengthen their bullpen. The trade involved two other prospects, all of whom were ranked in the Top 20 Prospects list within the organization. Both teams have officially confirmed the trade.
In exchange, the Rockies sent outfielder Forrest Wall, a 2014 first-round MLB draft pick and their 13th-ranked prospect, along with first baseman Chad Spanberger, a sixth-round pick from the 2017 draft, to Toronto.
The 36-year-old Oh has previous pitching experience in Korea and Japan before joining the Cardinals in 2016. Throughout this season, he has made 48 appearances, ranking fifth in the American League. Oh has a record of 4-3 with a 2.68 ERA, two saves, and 55 strikeouts in 47 innings.
During his time with the Cardinals from 2016 to 2017, Oh maintained a 2.85 ERA with a 7-9 record. He is currently earning $1.75 million this season while having a club option for $4.25 million in 2019, automatically vesting if he reaches 70 appearances. Moreover, his contract runs through the 2021 season.
Oh has notably progressed after facing challenges in June. Following a period where the relief staff posted a 4.10 ERA from June 26 up to a recent 8-2 loss to the Astros on Tuesday, the Rockies recognized the need to enhance their pitching staff. Despite the performances of Scott Oberg, Adam Ottavino, and Wade Davis, with Bryan Shaw also improving after returning from a right calf strain, the Rockies sought additional depth for their bullpen.
