Review of Trae Young’s Performance and Long-Range Shooting

Trae Young plays some amazing games but lacking in his long-range shoot

In the first five games, Trae Young has showcased some impressive skills, sparking intriguing possibilities. Questions arise about whether the 5th pick in the NBA draft could excel even more as a passer.

During a game in Oklahoma, Young led the NCAA in scoring and assists. His ability to make 30-foot 3-pointers off the dribble stood out. Surprisingly, in the NBA, Young has excelled more as a playmaker than a scorer, a style recognized first at the Utah Jazz Summer League and later at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.

In a recent game against the New York Knicks, Young scored 21 points, his highest so far. However, he struggled with his long-range shooting, going 6-of-35 on 3-point attempts, many of which were challenging shots. Despite the quality of his shots, the results have not reflected his capabilities, suggesting his shooting may have an element of luck.

Young has shown some accuracy with 10-of-31 shots, a 32 percent success rate. His shooting percentage of 53.5% is the lowest among NCAA players drafted in the first round this year. While Young has displayed impressive skills, he has avoided taking on rim protectors in most games.

In a key moment of a game where the score was 85-80, Young committed a turnover near midcourt but then attempted a rush to the basket. He missed passing the ball to his teammate Antonius Cleveland for a potential dunk. Throughout four full games, Young has averaged 6.0 assists, including 11 assists in the game against the Knicks.
