The St. Louis Cardinals made a strategic move on Thursday by acquiring the left-handed pitcher Elniery Garcia from the Philadelphia Phillies. This trade was initiated as the Cardinals had excess international bonus money and were in need of more left-handed pitching depth.
In exchange for a portion of their $5 million spending allowance, the Cardinals secured Garcia, as announced via their official Twitter account. This transaction marks the team’s second significant move in the minor leagues within the past ten days, following their acquisition of Tyler Webb from the San Diego Padres at the end of June.
At 23 years old, Garcia joins the Cardinals from the Phillies’ Class AA team, where he has struggled with a 0-6 record and a high 6.38 ERA over ten games. Additionally, Garcia has faced multiple injuries, particularly to his legs and feet, resulting in several stints on the disabled list, including his current placement on the seven-day disabled list due to turf toe.
Garcia’s career has not been without controversy, as he previously served an 80-game suspension for using a banned substance, leading to his removal from the Phillies’ 40-man roster.
Looking ahead, the Cardinals have ample international funds available for future trades, given their lack of available amateur players. With the recent opening of the signing period that extends until next summer, the team faces a challenge in utilizing their $5 million limit effectively.
