Robinson Cano, the Seattle Mariners’ second baseman had fractured his right hand on Sunday afternoon when he was struck by a fastball from Blaine hardy from the Detroit Tigers. The baseman was hit by an 88 mph ball by Hardy during the third inning of the Mariners’ loss to the Tigers on Sunday. Cano said that he knew right away that something was severely wrong with his right hand until the X-rays confirmed that it was poorly broken after the diagnosis.
Cano, who has struck .287 with four home runs and 23 RBIs till date, would be out indefinitely.
Cano expressed how he felt frustrated after the game got over by saying, “Of course it’s frustrating, the way we’ve been playing. But you have to go with what God gives you. It can be something worse, but I have to take the time and recover 100 percent and come back and play again.”
On Tuesday, Cano will be going to Philadelphia o consult a hand specialist to know what has to be done next to cure it, but it is highly unlikely that he will be undergoing surgery.
Scott Servais, Mariners manager, said on Sunday that De Gordon, who played significantly in his days with the Marlins, would stay in the centre field and may not be considered as an option to take the place of Cano at the second base.
This means that the club will be considering Gordon Beckham, the former White Sox’ eighth overall draft pick in the year 2008. Beckham has hit .300/.412/.500 along with four home runs and 15 RBIs in 114 plate appearances he has made at the Triple-A Tacona. If he gets selected as a full-time performer with Cano on the shelf, then he would add on to the appeal by playing as a middle infielder in AL-only leagues.
