LeBron James is supportive of having women coach him in the NBA. James said on Thursday, “I mean if she knows what she’s doing, we’ll love it. He said that at the end of the day basketball is not about male or female and if one knows the game then one knows the game.
He spoke on the subject when he was asked about it by Becky Hammon, the San Antonio Spurs assistant coach, who was reportedly a candidate for the men’s basketball’s head-coaching position at Colorado State University before the position was given to Niko Medved.
James continued, “Listen, we have so many female reporters now that know the game, and they cover the game.” He said that Doris Burke is one of the greatest that they have in the game. She knows the game, so it does not matter, he further added.
Burke will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in September this year for being the recipient of the Curt Gowdy award for electronic media. He called the Toronto Raptor’s game held against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday.
Gregg Popovich hired Hammon. Hammon is a standout player in her own right in the 2014 WNBA to join Popovich’s staff as the first full-time female assistant coach in the NBA.
James said, “Obviously, you guys know how fond I am of coach Pop, so for him to bring Becky in there to be able to be an assistant and give her input.” He added that he does not quite know how much input she has as he is not there on a day-to-day basis but just having her face there, it means a lot. He said that there are some female coaches in the NFL as well too and so he does not think of it being a problem at all.
