Former NFL quarterback Mark Rypien talks about depression, his suicide attempt

Mark Rypien, former NFL quarterback is now slowly opening up about his mental conditions, which he says has brought about by the injuries that he suffered due to playing football. Rypien is well known for winning the MVP honors in the Super Bowl XXVI and has spent most of his Pro Bowl career with the Redskins that ended in the year 2002.

In an interview with the KHQ, Rypien said that he has tried to attempt suicide and kill himself. He considers the cause of all of this to be the brain injuries that he suffered during his football career. Depression, dark places, anxiety, addictions, poor choices, and decisions, brought about by dozens of concussions and sub-concussive injuries from playing football, Rypien said.

He said that he alive today just because of Danielle, his wife who saved him when he tried to attempt suicide. Rypien said that that he took 150 pills and drank a bottle of booze. It was for his wife coming home and finding him lying on the floor and shoving in hydrogen peroxide in his throat that he is alive today.

When KHQ asked him about some domestic violence incident that happened between Rypien and his wife the previous year, Rypien blamed it on the medication that he was taking. He further said that he cannot remember that night clearly now. KHQ later reported that the charges filed against him were dropped and the case was closed.

KHQ also questioned him about his involvement in a prostitution sting which happened in Spokane in the year 2012. He admitted to this fact and said that he had indulged in sex with prostitutes working in a series of spas which were later shut down in a police sting which happened the same year.

Although he said that football has provided him with wonderful things, Rypien said that he has strongly soured on the game.
