Lou Anna Simon, Michigan State University President, plans to step down. As per the sources, the news came to limelight after the sentencing of Larry Nassar, the former Michigan State doctor. Nassar has been sentenced 40 to 175 years in prison and charged with seven counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Around 160 girls and women athletics had brought an allegation of sexual harassment against Larry Nassar.
As per the report, Simon was asked for resigning by two of Michigan State’s eight governing board members. Trustee Dianne, the trustee of the governing board Dianne Byrum, give her consent over the immediate resignation of Simon. She has also released a statement regarding this.
Another trustee of the board Mitch Lyons stated that Simon should step down because the public’s trust has been damaged severely during her leadership. Byrum also joined the list of the people who have who have urged Simon to resign from her post after the sentencing hearing for Nassar. As per the report Nassar had abused girls and young women during the last season when he was appointed to treat them for injuries in a sports clinic on Michigan State’s campus.
On Wednesday, Michigan’s stated House of Representative passed a resolution for the resignation of Simon. This was also supported by the state politicians from the East Lansing area. Apart from them, the university’s student government and its student newspaper also stated that they have not trust on the current administration and Simon should resign from the post, after that the school will able to move from the shock and depression caused by Nassar.
