The Chicago Cubs extended their impressive winning streak with a 3-1 victory against the Colorado Rockies at Wrigley Field on Monday night, pushing their record to 8-2 in the last ten games. Cubs starter Jameson Taillon showcased his skill on the mound, retiring the first 14 batters and concluding his outing with seven strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings, allowing just one run.
The Cubs seized an early lead when Ian Happ crossed home plate following a groundout by Dansby Swanson in the first inning. The Rockies equalized with a solo homer from Mickey Moniak in the fifth. However, Chicago quickly regained the lead, thanks to a key RBI single from Kyle Tucker, who later added a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning.
Tucker’s postgame Instagram activity made headlines as well. As he prepares for free agency next season, the outfielder shared a photo from the victory captioned:
“We ain’t no puppies. We some DAWGS.”
Rockies Struggle Deepens After Loss to Cubs
The Colorado Rockies are now sitting at a dismal 9-45, marking the lowest record in modern MLB history for this time of year. This latest defeat is part of a troubling streak, with the team losing eight of their last nine games, continually showing signs of struggle despite some moments of promise.
Palmquist (0-3) provided a commendable performance, lasting five innings while surrendering only three hits and two runs in his third MLB start. Yet, the Rockies’ offense fell short once more. Besides Moniak’s solo homer, the team was unable to muster any substantial threats.
The Rockies’ best opportunity arose in the sixth inning when they positioned runners on second and third with just one out. However, a clever throw to home by Nico Hoerner prevented Jacob Stallings from scoring, and Michael Toglia struck out, effectively ending the inning.
Coming up, the Colorado Rockies will face the Chicago Cubs again on Tuesday night.
