Former football coach Kevin Sumlin, who previously coached at Texas A&M Aggies, has been arrested in Florida on charges of driving under the influence.
Maryland co-offensive coordinator, Kevin Sumlin, has pleaded not guilty and waived arraignment. He is facing a charge that holds a maximum sentence of six months in jail. Sumlin reportedly declined a breathalyzer test, which may result in his license being suspended for a year.
The arrest took place in Tampa around 1 a.m. on Saturday, while the University of Maryland’s football team was on a bye week.
Taylor Lyons of The Diamondback, the independent student newspaper of the University of Maryland, broke the news on Monday evening.
“Maryland Athletics is aware of the incident this past weekend involving football coach Kevin Sumlin,” the university stated. “As this is an ongoing investigation, we will have no further comment.”

Sumlin, currently the co-offensive coordinator at Maryland, previously served as the head coach at Houston (2008-2011), Texas A&M (2012-2017), and Arizona (2018-2020). He gained recognition for coaching Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M in 2012.
In 2022, Sumlin was the head coach of the USFL’s Houston Gamblers.
Earlier this year, Maryland hired Sumlin as its co-offensive coordinator, and his presence on the coaching staff has contributed to the Terps’ high placement among Big Ten teams in terms of points per game.
