The USA once again claimed victory over Mexico in the World Cup Qualifiers, winning with a score of two-nil. This recurring outcome occurred on Friday night, this time in Cincinnati instead of the usual location in Columbus. Despite the venue change, the Americans took a significant step towards securing a spot in the World Cup while also earning respect from their CONCACAF competitors.
Christian Pulisic, who came off the bench, proved to be the catalyst for the team, scoring a header in the 74th minute. Weston McKennie, another prominent player based in Europe, extended the lead to 2-0 with a composed finish in the 85th minute. Currently, the USA is level on points with Mexico at the top of the ‘Octagonal’ group, with Canada trailing by just one point and remaining undefeated after seven games. The top three teams in the group will directly qualify for the World Cup in Qatar, while the fourth-placed team will have a playoff opportunity to secure a spot in the tournament.
