Aleksandar Katai, a member of the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer team, was compelled to issue an apology following inflammatory comments made by his wife on social media.
Tea Katai advocated for violence against Black Lives Matter demonstrators, labeling them as “disgusting cattle.”
“I do not endorse these views and they do not reflect my beliefs or that of my family.”
“I vehemently oppose white supremacy, racism, and violence against individuals of color. Black lives matter. This incident was a mistake made by my family, and I take full accountability.”
“I will ensure that my family and I undertake the necessary steps to educate ourselves, listen, understand, and stand in support of the black community.”
The team also issued a statement:
After 48 hours of issuing their statement, the team opted to cut ties with Aleksandar Katai due to his wife’s “racist and violent” statements.
“The LA Galaxy unequivocally denounce any form of racism, including remarks that advocate violence or disparage the endeavors of those striving for racial justice,” stated the team. “The LA Galaxy stand in solidarity with communities of color, primarily the Black community, in the protests against systemic racism, social inequity, prejudice, and aggression.”
Katai had been in his debut season with the Galaxy and had participated in two matches this season. Previously, he played for the Chicago Fire over two seasons, featuring in 62 games from 2018-2019 with 18 goals and 12 assists.
