According to US Soccer, the organization has offered the women’s team equal pay for matches within its jurisdiction, aligning with the compensation received by the male players. However, the women players are requesting further equality, including having bonuses for the World Cup match the men’s team’s bonuses.
USSF responded to criticisms from the women’s team by highlighting the additional benefits the women players receive, such as guaranteed annual salaries, healthcare coverage, pregnancy and parental leave, and help with child-care.
The national women’s team is moving forward with a lawsuit against US Soccer on the basis of gender discrimination and is looking to claim damages of up to $66 million. The trial is scheduled to commence in May.
Carlos Cordeiro, the President of USSF, mentioned in a statement that the organization has made numerous attempts to engage with the WNT to discuss potential solutions. He stated that the women’s team has consistently declined these meetings, insisting that US Soccer commits to bridging the gap in future prize money awarded by Fifa for the men’s and women’s World Cups.
Molly Levison, a spokesperson for the WNT, refuted Cordeiro’s statements, accusing the USSF of spreading misinformation and emphasizing that the organization has never provided equal pay to the women players.
