Wang Qiang and Serena Williams had a previous encounter in New York where Wang could only manage to win a single game against the formidable American. However, in their recent match in Australia, Qiang pulled off a major upset by securing a victory.
Ranked number 29 in the world, Wang Qiang won the match 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-5, dashing Williams’ hopes of matching Margaret Court’s record of 24 singles grand slam titles. The intense battle lasted two hours and 41 minutes, shedding light on Williams’ diminishing abilities on the court.
Williams, now 38, seemed to struggle with her agility compared to her younger years, especially after the first hour of play.
In contrast, Wang was overjoyed with her performance on court.
“I had faith in myself today,” she shared with reporters. “I felt really good about my game. I am thrilled. After the second set, I was a bit lost. I needed to stay composed. I always remind myself to stay calm and have confidence in my abilities.”
