The USA men’s soccer team announced that it is canceling its scheduled January training camp in Doha, Qatar, due to escalating tensions in the region. The camp was originally planned to take place from January 5th to the 25th.
In a statement released on Twitter, U.S. Soccer MNT stated, “In light of the evolving situation in the region, U.S. Soccer has opted to delay its trip to Qatar for the Men’s National Team’s planned January training camp.
“Meanwhile, we are exploring alternative options to prepare for the upcoming match against Costa Rica on February 1 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif. We are collaborating with the Qatar Football Association to arrange a future opportunity for our team to experience Qatar’s top-notch facilities and hospitality.”
The decision was made just a day before the camp was set to kick off, following a US military airstrike that took out Qassem Soleimani, a high-ranking Iranian military leader.
The US team is eager to secure training time in Qatar soon, especially since the country is set to host the 2022 World Cup. In the interim, the team will commence training on the 6th in Bradenton, Florida.
