Tottenham bounced back from a home loss to Wolves with a convincing 3-0 win against Cardiff, propelling them into second place in the Premier League standings, trailing leaders Liverpool by six points while overtaking reigning champions Manchester City. Manager Mauricio Pochettino has relied on a core group of players throughout the busy festive period, a tactic that has paid off remarkably well.

The consistent team selection initially proved successful with a 6-2 win over Everton and a 5-0 victory against Bournemouth on Christmas Day. However, it backfired in the match against Wolves as tired legs led to three late goals, turning a 1-0 lead into a disappointing 3-1 defeat.

Following the defeat, Pochettino acknowledged fatigue as a factor and faced a crucial decision ahead of the Cardiff match just three days later: stick with the familiar faces or inject fresh legs into the lineup.

With only one change from the Wolves game, Danny Rose replaced Ben Davies at left-back. This meant that five of Tottenham’s front six players, including Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko, Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-Min, and Harry Kane, started their fourth consecutive match in a span of just 10 days.

Pochettino’s approach was clear: prioritize effort or prioritize experience. The strategy paid off early as Tottenham took the lead within three minutes, with Kane inadvertently converting a Kieran Trippier cross. The lead was doubled in the 12th minute as Kane, Sissoko, and Son combined to set up Eriksen, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner from outside the box.
