Novak Djokovic further solidified his exceptional track record at the Australian Open grand slam by defeating Daniil Medvedev in straight sets on Sunday with a score of 7-5, 6-2, 6-2.

The current world no. 1 clinched his ninth Australian Open title, maintaining his consecutive wins at the tournament since 2019. This victory adds yet another milestone to Djokovic’s impressive tennis career, breaking the record for the most Australian Open wins in the Open Era that commenced in 1969.

Despite facing challenges leading up to the tournament, Djokovic managed to triumph against the odds. Concerns arose when he expressed the need for improved player isolation conditions in a letter to tournament officials, garnering attention from the Australian public. Additionally, an abdominal injury in the third round cast doubts on his ability to progress to the finals.

Nevertheless, Djokovic bounced back with a commanding victory over Aslan Karatsev in the semi-finals, affirming his physical readiness for the championship. His decisive performance against Medvedev, who ranks world no. 4 below Dominic Thiem, propels him closer to the ranks of the greatest male tennis players in history.

With 18 grand slam titles to his credit, Djokovic now sits just two titles behind Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, the current frontrunners in men’s tennis.
