Chase Elliott Gets Full Cup Redemption By Winning In Charlotte

Despite his win in the Trucks on Tuesday night, you always got the sense that Chase Elliott needed- and could only get- real redemption via the Cup Series. Following two close misses- a late wreck at Darlington and a strategy call gone awry at Charlotte on Sunday- he stepped up to the plate and knocked the ball out of the park on Thursday night.

Rain once again prevented the race to go off without a hitch, but when it had finally ended, it was Elliott’s #9 that crossed the finish line first to claim his first victory of the season and presumably clinch his place in the Playoffs as a result. He had run up front for most of the evening’s 310 miles- one of the shortest Cup races in decades- but he didn’t take the lead until 27 laps remained. Kevin Harvick had been setting the pace, but his car just gave up speed, seeing him drop back. Elliott took advantage and held on to win in a no-frills run to the checkers. Denny Hamlin came in second despite a good chunk of his crew being suspended, while Ryan Blaney, Ricky Stenhouse, and Kurt Busch rounded out the top five finishers.
